Summer sunshine is wonderful, usually Minnesotans can’t get
enough of it after the long, long winter that we endure. With the hot sun come the UV rays that can be extremely
damaging to the eyes.
As often as this advice is given, it’s often overlooked, almost
as much as people forgetting to use sun block. The sun can leave long-term
damage to the eyes and it’s crucial to be aware of how to protect them in the
summer season.
Here are some facts about the drawbacks UV rays:
- UV rays are even damaging on cloudy days because they are more prevalent at higher altitudes.
- Children don’t have fully developed lens so that makes them more susceptible to eye damage from the sun.
- The sun can cause short and long term vision problems. Eye disease is one extreme result of sun damage.
It’s most important to wear protective sunglasses, even when
it’s cloudy out. Look for the sticker that shows UV ray protection. There are
plenty of fashionable sunglasses and even prescription sunglasses that have
protection. Look for sunglasses that are at least UV 400. You also should
search for sunglasses that protect you against UVA and UVB rays, the most
detrimental.
Taking extra precaution will benefit you long term and help
to avoid diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygia. Make
sure to get eye exams at least once a year to make sure your eyes are in good
health!
